What a wonderful vacation. The BEACH is the winner !
My wife and I just returned from a week long stay in Turks and Caicos 7/9/15 to 7/16/15. This trip was our first to Turks and Caicos and we absolutely fell in love with the beauty of the beaches, the culture, the people and the food. We rented a car and drove around a good portion of the island and discovered some restaurants sorta off the beaten path and got to explore a lot of what makes TCI special.
It was an adventure for sure. We strongly recommend that you rent a car. We felt relatively safe and everyone seemed nice. Most of the people living there are native "belongers", and there are Jamaican decent ,Canadian and a mix of other nationalities. They are under British rule.
Turks and Caicos is not a cheap island... Just about anything that doesn't come out of the sea is imported. The restaurants we recommend are Somewhere Cafe, Bugaloos, Mr. Grouper, Kalookis and Chinsons. We ate at Chinsons twice. There are a few restaurants that we wanted to try but never made it there.
We stayed at the WEST BAY CLUB which is situated on one of the widest stretch of Grace Bay Beach. The sand is soft and powdery and the water is so clear that I could see the corns on toes through waist deep water. The resort itself is sort of new (approx. 7-9 years old) and is next door to the Ganesevoort Hotel. WEST BAY CLUB is a laid back, relatively quiet, relaxing resort situated in a great location. The grounds within the hotel are maintained well as is the hotel room that we stayed in.
They called our room a studio which we guess is code for hotel room with a microwave, mini fridge and no view to speak of. Two or three times we had to ask for wash clothes. Larger towels and everything else were provided. Other than that the housekeeping crew did a wonderful job. We would strongly advice booking an oceanfront suite. They looked nice and were laid out like an apartment. BUT REALLY, with that beautiful beach, who's going to be spend a lot of time in the room anyway?
The beach and pool at West Bay were never crowded. The staff was very accommodating and friendly, especially Giovanni (greeter/bellman), Russell (Noodle Bar & Kitchen waiter) and Winston (security). There was a complementary breakfast buffet that was pretty good. There is also drink and food service at the beach.
The wifi worked throughout the hotel grounds and even on the beach well.
All in all we would return to the West Bay Club.
